What is an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)?

The primary focus of the EMT is to provide basic medical care and transportation for emergency and non- emergency patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation, and functions as part of a comprehensive EMS response under medical oversight. An EMT performs interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance and is a link from the scene to the emergency health care system.

About the Program:

The eligible candidate will be hired as an employee and compensated at a training wage. The program is a rigorous training period which qualifies the employee to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians ("NREMT") - EMT Examination. There is no cost for the class and all books, tuition, fees, and uniforms will be paid by McCormick Ambulance. Upon successful completion of the class, all tests and state certification, the employee will be transferred to an EMT position with an increase to the EMT compensation rate.

Desired candidates must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.

  • Have proof of a HS diploma or GED

  • Valid Driver's License

  • Have all required immunizations.

  • Successfully complete the pre-employment screening which includes motor vehicle and criminal background checks, drug testing and a physical agility test.

What happens after passing the course?

After successful completion of the course, the employee will be eligible to take a written and skills test offered by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians ("NREMT") - EMT Examination, register with the Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Agency (LACEMA), go through the DMV process for your Ambulance certificate, and will be required to work for McCormick.

Upon receipt of the state EMT-B certification, employees will be assigned their full-time shift and complete new-hire orientation training.
